What a Whole House Filter Actually Does
An under-sink filter β whether carbon or reverse osmosis β treats one tap. The water from every other tap, every shower, the bath, the washing machine, the dishwasher β all of it is still unfiltered Tenerife water with its 500mg/L mineral load and chlorine.
A whole house system is different. It connects to the main water supply inlet for your property β the point where water enters the building β and filters everything before it reaches any tap. From the moment it's installed, every water outlet in your home runs filtered, softened water.
Whole House vs Under-Sink: The Key Difference
Both systems are valuable β but they solve different problems. This is the clearest way to see the distinction:
- β Pure drinking tap filtered
- β No more bottles
- β Better-tasting coffee & tea
- β Shower water still hard
- β Washing machine unprotected
- β Bathroom still gets limescale
- β Every shower softened
- β All appliances protected
- β Better skin & hair
- β Less limescale everywhere
- β Softer laundry
- β Whole plumbing system
The most popular combination is a whole house system (for showers, appliances, laundry) plus an under-sink RO system (for pure drinking water). The whole house filter softens and conditions the water throughout the property. The RO then takes the drinking tap to an even higher standard of purity. We can quote a combined installation β it's more cost-effective than having them installed separately.
Is It Right for You?
The whole house system isn't for everyone. Here's an honest guide to who benefits most:
Villa or larger apartment owner
If you own your property and have multiple bathrooms, a washing machine and dishwasher β you'll feel the benefit across every room. The cost per outlet is very reasonable when spread across a full property.
Anyone with skin sensitivities or eczema
If hard shower water is aggravating your skin or scalp, the under-sink filter won't help β you need the whole house system. The improvement in shower water quality is usually felt within days.
Homeowner worried about appliance costs
Washing machines, dishwashers and boilers in Tenerife are working against 500mg/L water every day. The whole house system pays for itself partly through the appliance lifespan it protects.
Short-term renter or small apartment
The whole house system requires installation at the main inlet and landlord agreement. For renters, the under-sink carbon filter (β¬199) or RO (β¬399) is the more practical starting point.
What It Costs
The whole house system starts from β¬699 installed for a standard apartment. Larger properties β villas, larger homes, properties with complex plumbing β are quoted individually. Most installations fall in the β¬699ββ¬950 range.
The annual filter service costs β¬150/year. We send reminders when it's due and handle the service ourselves.
A new washing machine in Tenerife costs β¬400ββ¬800. A dishwasher replacement, β¬300ββ¬600. A boiler, significantly more. The whole house filter at β¬699 protects all of these simultaneously. Most homeowners find the cost remarkably easy to justify when they look at it this way.
