What a Whole House Filter Actually Does

An under-sink filter β€” whether carbon or reverse osmosis β€” treats one tap. The water from every other tap, every shower, the bath, the washing machine, the dishwasher β€” all of it is still unfiltered Tenerife water with its 500mg/L mineral load and chlorine.

A whole house system is different. It connects to the main water supply inlet for your property β€” the point where water enters the building β€” and filters everything before it reaches any tap. From the moment it's installed, every water outlet in your home runs filtered, softened water.

🚿
Shower & Bath
Softer water immediately noticeable β€” skin hydrates better, hair stays manageable. The difference most people feel first.
🫧
Washing Machine
Reduces limescale build-up in the drum and element. Extends the machine's lifespan. Clothes come out softer and colours stay brighter.
🍽️
Dishwasher
Fewer water marks on glasses and crockery. Reduced scale on heating elements. Less rinse aid needed.
πŸ”§
Plumbing
Softer water is less aggressive on pipes, joints and valves. Reduces scale build-up in shower heads and tap aerators.
πŸ›
Bathroom Fixtures
Less limescale on shower screens, tiles and basin surfaces. Significantly easier to keep clean.
🧺
Laundry
Towels come out softer. Whites stay white. You use less detergent because it lathers and rinses better in softer water.

Whole House vs Under-Sink: The Key Difference

Both systems are valuable β€” but they solve different problems. This is the clearest way to see the distinction:

Under-Sink System
Drinking water only
  • βœ“ Pure drinking tap filtered
  • βœ“ No more bottles
  • βœ“ Better-tasting coffee & tea
  • βœ— Shower water still hard
  • βœ— Washing machine unprotected
  • βœ— Bathroom still gets limescale
VS
Whole House System
Every tap, every outlet
  • βœ“ Every shower softened
  • βœ“ All appliances protected
  • βœ“ Better skin & hair
  • βœ“ Less limescale everywhere
  • βœ“ Softer laundry
  • βœ“ Whole plumbing system
Many customers have both

The most popular combination is a whole house system (for showers, appliances, laundry) plus an under-sink RO system (for pure drinking water). The whole house filter softens and conditions the water throughout the property. The RO then takes the drinking tap to an even higher standard of purity. We can quote a combined installation β€” it's more cost-effective than having them installed separately.

Is It Right for You?

The whole house system isn't for everyone. Here's an honest guide to who benefits most:

βœ“ Great fit

Villa or larger apartment owner

If you own your property and have multiple bathrooms, a washing machine and dishwasher β€” you'll feel the benefit across every room. The cost per outlet is very reasonable when spread across a full property.

βœ“ Great fit

Anyone with skin sensitivities or eczema

If hard shower water is aggravating your skin or scalp, the under-sink filter won't help β€” you need the whole house system. The improvement in shower water quality is usually felt within days.

βœ“ Great fit

Homeowner worried about appliance costs

Washing machines, dishwashers and boilers in Tenerife are working against 500mg/L water every day. The whole house system pays for itself partly through the appliance lifespan it protects.

β†’ Consider alternatives

Short-term renter or small apartment

The whole house system requires installation at the main inlet and landlord agreement. For renters, the under-sink carbon filter (€199) or RO (€399) is the more practical starting point.

What It Costs

The whole house system starts from €699 installed for a standard apartment. Larger properties β€” villas, larger homes, properties with complex plumbing β€” are quoted individually. Most installations fall in the €699–€950 range.

The annual filter service costs €150/year. We send reminders when it's due and handle the service ourselves.

Compared to the alternative

A new washing machine in Tenerife costs €400–€800. A dishwasher replacement, €300–€600. A boiler, significantly more. The whole house filter at €699 protects all of these simultaneously. Most homeowners find the cost remarkably easy to justify when they look at it this way.

Questions About the Whole House System

Will it affect water pressure?
A properly sized and installed whole house system should have no noticeable effect on water pressure. The system is sized to your property's flow rate, so the filter doesn't restrict flow. If you have any concerns about existing pressure in your property, we check this during the installation assessment β€” and will flag any issues before starting.
Does the whole house filter also purify drinking water?
The whole house filter significantly improves the water throughout the property β€” reducing chlorine, sediment, and some mineral content. However, for pure drinking water on par with an RO system, we'd recommend adding an under-sink RO to the kitchen tap as well. Many of our customers have both β€” the whole house filter for everything (showers, washing machine, etc.) and an RO for the drinking tap specifically.
How long does the installation take?
A standard apartment installation typically takes 2–3 hours. Larger properties or those with more complex plumbing may take slightly longer. We install everything, test the system, and leave the property clean and tidy. There's a brief period during installation when the mains water supply is off β€” we always confirm the timing with you beforehand.
Can I get the whole house system and an RO at the same time?
Yes β€” and this is by far the most comprehensive solution. We often install both in the same visit, which is more efficient and slightly more cost-effective than doing them separately. The whole house system goes in at the mains inlet, the RO goes under the kitchen sink. Message us for a combined quote β€” we'll give you a clear price for both together.
