Questions About Limescale and Filters

Will a filter remove the existing limescale from my appliances?
No — a filter prevents new limescale from forming but doesn't dissolve what's already there. For existing scale in kettles and coffee machines, a descaling treatment before installation is a good idea. In washing machines and dishwashers, a service descale before switching to filtered water gives the best starting point. After that, the filter prevents further build-up from day one.
My washing machine is already struggling — is it too late to help?
It depends on how much damage has already been done. If the element hasn't failed yet, switching to filtered water will stop further scale build-up and give the machine a significantly longer remaining lifespan. Does the under-sink RO system protect my washing machine from limescale?
