Rental seems like the easy option: no upfront cost, someone else handles maintenance, and you can cancel. But water filter rental in Tenerife — particularly for whole house systems — follows a pattern that looks familiar once you run the numbers. By year 3, you've paid more than the outright cost. By year 5, you've paid nearly double. And you still don't own anything.

The Numbers Side by Side

Using a reverse osmosis system as the example (€399 to buy outright, typical rental of €18–22/month):

Period Rental cost (€20/month) Buy outright (€399 + €80/year service)
Year 1€240€399 (install) + €80 (service) = €479
Year 2€480€479 + €80 = €559
Year 2.5 (break-even)€600€559 + €40 (½ yr) ≈ €599
Year 3€720€639
Year 5€1,200€799
Year 8€1,920€1,039

Break-even is around 2.5 years. After that, every month you're paying rental is money that would have been free if you'd bought. At year 5, you've spent €400 more for the same water quality.

For a whole house system (€699 to buy, typical rental €30–40/month):

Period Rental (€35/month) Buy (€699 + €100/year service)
Year 1€420€799
Year 2 (break-even)€840€899
Year 3€1,260€999
Year 5€2,100€1,199
Year 8€3,360€1,499
But rental rates often increase

The table above assumes a fixed rental rate. Most rental contracts include clauses allowing the provider to increase rates annually — typically 3–5% per year. Over 5 years, that means the rental cost compounds. The break-even point moves earlier; the total overspend gets larger.

The Hidden Costs of Rental

📋
Minimum contract terms
Many rental contracts have 12–24 month minimum terms. Moving property, changing your mind, or wanting a better system means early exit fees that can wipe out any perceived savings.
🔧
Call-out charges
Some rental agreements cover maintenance but charge for call-outs. Others cover "standard" maintenance but define cartridge changes as extras. Read the small print carefully.
📦
Removal on contract end
When you end a rental, the unit is removed — and you're left with nothing. You've paid years of monthly fees and own no equipment. Buying means the system is yours indefinitely.
🏠
Property complications
A rented whole house filter on a property you're trying to sell can create complications. A system you own is a feature that adds value; a rental agreement attached to the property is a liability.

When Rental Might Make Sense

There are genuinely situations where rental is the right call:

  • You're in a short-term rental property (less than 18 months) and know you'll be leaving
  • Your landlord won't allow permanent installation and you want filtered water anyway
  • Cash flow is the constraint and the upfront cost isn't feasible right now

For anyone planning to stay in Tenerife for 2+ years — which describes the majority of British expats — buying outright is consistently better value. The break-even is typically under 2.5 years; after that, the savings are permanent.

We don't do rental — here's why we tell you that

Ultra Pure Water Tenerife sells systems outright, not on rental agreements. We think that's the right model for most customers, and the numbers back it up. If you genuinely need rental due to short-term plans, we'll tell you honestly — and if rental is available from another provider that suits your situation, we'll point you in the right direction. We'd rather give good advice than a sale that doesn't serve you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I finance a water filter purchase rather than renting?
We don't currently offer in-house financing, but some customers use a 0% credit card or personal loan to spread the upfront cost. Even with interest on a personal loan, the total cost over 3–5 years typically remains lower than a rental contract. The key difference is that at the end of any financing period, you own the system.
If I buy and then move property, what happens to the system?
Under-sink systems (carbon filter and reverse osmosis) can be removed and reinstalled at your new property — we charge a service visit fee for this. A whole house filter at the mains is more involved to relocate; many customers choose to leave it as a feature of the property they're selling (it genuinely adds value) and install a new system at the new address.
