Welcome to Tenerife. You'll quickly notice a few things: the sun is reliable, the community is warm, and the water is hard. Very hard. Almost everyone who moves here from the UK has the same experience — the kettle furs up within weeks, hair feels different, and at some point an appliance engineer delivers the line: "It's the water." This guide tells you what you actually need to know, without the waffle.
What's in Tenerife's Water
Most of Tenerife South's water comes from desalination plants on the coast. The desalination process produces microbiologically safe water — it's not the bacteria or parasites you might worry about in some other destinations. What it leaves behind (or adds back through the distribution system) is a very high concentration of dissolved minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium.
Tenerife South typically tests at 500–600mg/L TDS (Total Dissolved Solids). To put that in context:
- UK tap water average: ~240mg/L
- EU hard water benchmark: ~300mg/L
- WHO recommended limit: 500mg/L
- Tenerife South: 500–600mg/L
You're consistently at or above the WHO guideline, and more than twice the hardness of what you were likely used to in the UK.
Technically yes — it's treated to drinking water standards. But most people find it tastes noticeably different from UK tap water. The high mineral content gives it a flat, slightly mineral taste, and it often has a mild chlorine smell from treatment. The vast majority of expats don't drink it straight; they buy bottled water or install a filter.
What It Does to Your Home
The effects start quickly and compound over time:
- Kettle: Visible furring within 2–4 weeks. Element failure within 12–18 months if not descaled regularly.
- Coffee machine: Heating chamber blocks within 1–2 years. Affects flavour noticeably before it fails entirely.
- Washing machine: Element scales over 3–6 years. Replacement comes at least 4 years earlier than it would in the UK.
- Dishwasher: White marks on glasses from the first month. Spray arms and internal surfaces scale progressively.
- Boiler: Scale reduces efficiency, increases fuel costs, and shortens life expectancy.
- Hair and skin: Mineral coating on the hair shaft, drier skin. Usually noticeable within the first month.
- Shower screens and bathroom surfaces: Limescale builds up faster than in the UK — constant cleaning without a filter.
Your First Month: What to Do
Which Filter Is Right for You?
Most British expats who've been in Tenerife for a few years and who got a whole house filter say the same thing: "I wish I'd done it the week I arrived." The combination of whole house filter + reverse osmosis gives you clean water from every tap and ultra-pure drinking water from the kitchen tap — total cost €1,098, both installed in the same visit.
